Cross gaps and reach new areas early
In Enshrouded, exploration quickly hits a wall—literally. Large gaps, broken bridges, and vertical terrain block progress long before you unlock advanced mobility tools.
That’s where the Grappling Hook comes in. It’s one of the first major exploration tools you can craft, and it allows you to swing across gaps and reach otherwise inaccessible areas.
This guide explains exactly how to craft and use the Grappling Hook, step by step.
What the Grappling Hook Does
The Grappling Hook lets you:
- Cross large gaps safely
- Reach elevated platforms
- Progress through key early-game areas
It can only be used at specific anchor points, which are clearly marked in the environment.
How to Unlock Grappling Hook Crafting

Before you can craft the Grappling Hook, you need a Workbench.
How to Craft a Workbench
- 8× Wood Logs
- 3× String
String is crafted from Plant Fiber, which you can collect from bushes. Wood Logs are obtained by chopping down trees with an axe.
Once placed at your base, the Workbench unlocks the Grappling Hook recipe.
Grappling Hook Crafting Materials

To craft the Grappling Hook, you’ll need:
- 4× Metal Scraps
- 7× String
- 10× Shroud Spores
String is easy to produce, but Metal Scraps and Shroud Spores require combat.
Where to Find Metal Scraps & Shroud Spores (Early Game)

A reliable early location is near Braelyn Bridge, close to the starting area.
What to Do
- Cross the land beneath Braelyn Bridge
- Defeat enemies wearing metal armor
- These enemies:
- Always drop Shroud Spores
- Often drop Metal Scraps
Farm these enemies until you have enough materials, then return to your base to craft the Grappling Hook at the Workbench.
How to Use the Grappling Hook

After crafting:
- Open your Character screen
- Equip the Grappling Hook
- Approach a grapple anchor point
- Press the on-screen prompt (default E) to attach and swing
The first required use of the Grappling Hook is typically at Braelyn Bridge.
Grappling Hook Tips (Avoid Dying to the Fog)
- Watch your stamina
If stamina is empty, you can’t grapple. - Time your jumps
For larger gaps, jump before grappling to maximize distance. - Avoid landing in the Shroud
Missing a grapple often means falling straight into dangerous fog.
Final Tip
If exploration feels frustrating or progress seems blocked, you’re probably missing the Grappling Hook. Crafting it early dramatically opens up the map and makes traversal far safer.
