Quick Answer

Coal is found in the Albaneve Summits region in northern Enshrouded. Unlock the ancient spire there, then glide down to the coal nodes — two are south of the spire, and one is in a cave slightly west of Rothstep (northwest of the spire). Bring a torch and at least a Steel Pickaxe.

The trip up is the hard part — once you’re at the top of the spire, gliding to the coal nodes is fast and relatively safe. Just don’t linger at altitude or you’ll catch hypothermia.

What You Need Before You Go

A crafted pickaxe — Steel or higher. Pickaxes are crafted, not looted. If you’re playing standard mode where weapons have durability, bring 2 just in case one breaks mid-trip. The higher tier the better — lower tier pickaxes mine slowly and chew through durability fast.

A glider — Ghost Glider strongly recommended. You can attempt this with a basic glider, but the distances are tight. The Ghost Glider gives you the range and control you’ll need for the longer routes without scrambling halfway down. See our Ghost Glider Guide if you don’t have it yet.

Worth noting: if you’ve already made it to the Albaneve Summits Spire, you likely have the level to unlock the Ghost Glider too — so it’s worth grabbing it before this run.

Frost resistance gear or food. The top of the spire and the high altitude routes will hit you with hypothermia fast. Check our Hypothermia Guide for how to deal with it. Once you glide down to the coal caves you’re out of the cold zone, but the journey up matters.

A torch. Some of the coal nodes are inside dark caves. Bring a torch — you’ll need it.

Be ready for combat. Some caves contain tiger-like creatures. Have your weapon ready before walking in.

Step 1: Unlock the Albaneve Summits Spire

The Albaneve Summits is the northern mountain region. Travel there and unlock the Ancient Spire — it acts as your fast travel point and the launch pad for every coal run going forward.

Step 2: Glide to the Coal Nodes

From the top of the spire, jump off and glide. As you descend, hypothermia stops being an issue — the coal zones below are out of the cold band.

The screenshots below mark the exact glide directions for each location.

Coal Cave Locations

Location 1 & 2: South of the Spire (Two Nodes)

Two coal nodes are located south of the Albaneve Summits Spire. Glide off the south face of the spire and follow the marked path in the screenshots.

Location 3: Cave West of Rothstep (Northwest of the Spire)

This is the easiest one to locate because Rothstep is a recognizable landmark. The cave sits slightly west of Rothstep itself. Glide from the spire heading northwest toward Rothstep, then make your way to the cave entrance just west of it.

This cave is dark — bring a torch. Enemy NPC’s may be inside, so engage carefully.

How Much Coal You’ll Get Per Run

Coal node yields vary — some nodes give more, some less. Across all three locations you should walk away with a solid haul that covers gear crafting for a while. If you find your pickaxe running low on durability, that’s why bringing a second is worth it.

Or you can turn Durability off in the game settings, your call.

Why Coal Matters

Coal is a core crafting material in Enshrouded — primarily used for upgrading gear and crafting higher-tier equipment. If you’re hitting a wall on what you can craft, coal is usually the bottleneck.

GameNautica Tips / Common Mistakes

Bring 2 pickaxes on standard difficulty. Durability eats into mining runs fast. One pickaxe might not finish a full circuit of all three locations. Steel pickaxe is the minimum — go higher if you have it.

Mark your own coal nodes. As you explore, you’ll find more nodes than the three listed here. On the map, right-click the location, create a marker, and pick an icon and color. This builds your own personal coal map for future runs — much faster than rediscovering the same nodes.

Stay aware of the tigers within caves. Don’t run blindly into caves with your pickaxe equipped. Switch to your weapon at the entrance and clear before mining.

Don’t sleep on the torch. Cave navigation is genuinely hard without one, and you might walk into an enemy you couldn’t see. Five seconds to light a torch saves a death.
